Professional Experience
Nester Hosiery Mt Airy,
NC
2011-Present VP Technology
Nester make socks for a wide range of retail stores, private labels,
and outdoor brands at their factory in rural North Carolina. I was
introduced to them as a consultant in 2005 and after many successful
projects, they approached me to continue leading their modernization
efforts.
Selected Accomplishments:
-
Our company was selected as the pilot garment manufacturer for the
Responsible Wool Standard because our high level of technology and
data-driven manufacturing made it easy to provide a clear chain of
custody from the receipt of certified wool to the dispatch of final
socks to Patagonia.
-
Holistically designed a system to move our business from an
estimated-cost model to a true standard-cost model in accordance with
GAAP. This included a component to streamline approval of costs on
thousands of products as they exist in every step of the manufacturing
process and to account for variances at month end.
-
Assisted in preparing the company for sale to a private equity group
by not only providing required tech diligence but also by interpreting
our operational data and projections.
-
Oversaw growth in several direct-to-consumer channels, including
developing a new Amazon-specific brand and bringing it from zero to
$500k of revenue in the first year.
-
Managed the virtualization of our locally hosted servers onto
Microsoft’s Hyper-V platform and developed disaster-recovery
plans for our core IT infrastructure.
-
Worked with our team on the factory floor to replace their
time-honored ink-and-paper production system. Designed, built, and
sold in a tablet application giving manufacturing real-time access to
information. Its enthusiastic adoption led to measurable gains in
manufacturing efficiency.
-
Designed, developed, and implemented genetic algorithms to automate
several labor-intensive factory scheduling positions which allowed us
to scale up without increasing headcount.
-
Championed integrating off-the-shelf software and services when they
can be tightly paired with our proprietary ERP system. Includes
deploying NuOrder for integration with our smaller B2B customers and
Liaison’s EDI stack for communicating with our larger customers.
-
Created a Slack bot that can answer basic questions about our data
and proactively alert the team to potential problems.
WayIn Denver, CO
2011 Technical Lead Engineer
WayIn were founded as a social media polling platform. The CTO
recruited me to form and lead an engineering team. Together we developed
the original prototype into a fast, scalable platform for our soft
launch.
Mobile Foundry Boulder,
CO
2005 – 2011 Independent Contractor/Principal Engineer
Mobile Foundry was a small software contractor who provided services to
a broad range of small and mid-sized businesses. This was a great
experience for me as I gained exposure to lots of different technologies
and industries.
Selected Accomplishments:
-
Built a Java application that ran on top of hundreds of servers at EC2 to evaluate different
approaches to closing high schools and redistricting a county. We
provided a solution to the school board which allowed them to close
two unnecessary schools while balancing the remaining student
population and reducing overall transit costs.
-
Created a system for analyzing the effectiveness and reach of a store
within their primary market area. This Java system loads each of the
store's existing customers into a PostGIS database. The
application then makes use of R to create a “Primary Market” shape. Experian and
Census data is then used to identify what makes those customers
unique and a custom mapping engine produces presentation quality pdf
maps.
-
Developed and maintained a custom ERP system for use in textile
manufacturing. Using C# on a mix of desktop, web and on mobile
terminals, this system handles all forecasting, supply chain,
manufacturing, employee time tracking, shipping and invoicing for a
US-based manufacturer..
-
Reverse-engineered the data files behind the two market-leading mortgage origination products, and created an algorithm that
was able to use the messy and incomplete data, current home value
estimates and historic rates to project the outcome of complex
variable rate and payment capped loans, ultimately identifying
customers who could benefit from refinancing.
-
Migrated an operational SMS based marketing service from a
traditional hosting environment to a load balanced implementation
on Amazon EC2. By only using a large amount of processing power during
high volume marketing campaigns we were able to cut operational costs
in half, while increasing flexibility and adding redundancy.
-
Created a prototype of a geographically enabled dating site
using JQuery and Java in under a month which was successfully used to
attract further investment in the project.
Sun Microsystems
Linlithgow, Scotland / Broomfield, CO
2000 – 2005 Software Development Engineer
I started as an intern on the “SunStart” program and was
given the chance to come to the United States for a year-long
internship. After returning to finish my degree I transitioned into
full-time employment and eventually made my way back to Colorado. I
spent most of that time maintaining the SunSolve support site and helped
migrate it to Java, and was awarded a US patent for my novel approach
for continuing to authenticate legacy services during the
transition.
